Can you get away with getting a fairly cheap drum set, but still practice on it? I guess since it seems odd for a female to play drums, I have always wanted to tinker with it. :)

Certainly
More expensive drums are easier to drum on for sure, but that's not necessarily good for practice. Yeah, I guess girls are usually bassists, heh.
